For those who visit my site who also enjoy reading, I will be listing and reviewing various dog books, both fiction and non-fiction. I also welcome you to make suggestions of books that you have read that you would like to share that are dog books. MY FAVORITES

Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. While I am a proud owner of this book, I must admit it is also my least read book. How is it my favorite? Because the characters are so real, with an excellent depiction of the time period. The relationship that the young boy has with his hunting coonhounds, Old Dan and Little Ann, is so beautiful and touching. I still cry when I read the first chapter, hence, I can not read it again. But I do love it.

A Dog’s Journey and A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron. I found these two books at the local library and am so glad that I did.  The author eloquently brings a very unique point of view into his stories in a very understandable and readable way. At first, when reading that it is about the life of a dog, from the dog’s point of view, I wondered if it was indeed even readable. But Cameron brings it off magnificently, and allows the dog to have a voice that they normally wouldn’t have. Things that humans may take for granted when dealing with their dog comes under a different light, and better understanding of how a dog thinks can be achieved by reading these delightful books.

TRAINING BOOKS

How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With by Clarice Rutherford and David Neal, DVM. I highly recommend this one for puppy buyers, especially new puppy buyers. Excellent book that covers what the breeder should do during the early development, then what the new owner should expect when they bring their young dog home.  Covered in this popular book is basic obedience, understanding your dog’s body language, common behavioral problems, and training advice for a well-rounded, well-mannered companion. Written so that it is very understandable and with practical applications.
