Homemade dog treats

Off and on I’ve enjoyed making the dogs homemade treats. It started years ago when someone gave me a recipe for bacon and cheese dog treats. I’m known to make up my own, so this past weekend, I made a double batch. It takes me all day to do, as I get distracted and interrupted, but the dogs sure enjoy the end product!

Here are some snapshots and just for the heck of it, the recipe. Enjoy! Let me know if you make some for your Ratties!

Homemade Carrot and Sweet Potato Dog Treats

1 cup hot, boiling water

1 bouillon cube (chicken or beef)

1 cup finely chopped carrots

1 cup finely chopped sweet potatoes

1 finely chopped garlic clove

1 egg

2 cups flour – add enough to make a workable dough

Preheat oven to 375.  Add the bouillon cube to the hot, boiling water and let it dissolve. Stir. Chop up carrots,  sweet potatoes and garlic, place in bowl.  Add the egg and water. Mix in the flour a little at a time to blend well. Add flour until you have a workable, not sticky, dough. Flour your board and roll out the treat dough to about 1/4″ thick, then cut with a small dog treat cookie cutter. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 30 minutes or until done. You can adjust the length of time, depending on how crunchy you want them. Place in an airtight container, otherwise they will get really crunchy!

I would recommend really chopping up the carrots, sweet potatoes and garlic as it makes it easier to roll out and cut.

This is an easy recipe to play with. You could add or delete different things, such as apple, bananas, cinnamon, cheese, bacon, etc. Just watch your moisture content, as that will affect the end result. You may want to turn the oven down a bit and bake them for a longer time. I couldn’t find any rice flour, but you could try that too. I don’t know how much different it will act, but you are welcome to be creative and try a few different options!

And what is so great about these, you can even taste test them! So bring out your bowls and rolling pin and bake up a batch of treats for your faithful companions! Trust me, they will love them!
